Alexander O’Neal is one of the most iconic soul and rhythm & blues singer/songwriters and one of the best soul singers to come from the 1980’s. He released a string of memorable hits including ‘Criticize’, ‘If You Were Here Tonight’ and ‘Never Knew Love Like This’ and had fourteen singles that reached the top 40 in the 1980’s and 1990’s.
He signed with Tabu Records in 1984 and sang backing vocals for artists such as The S.O.S Band and Cherelle. His self-titled first album was released in 1985 and included the single ‘If You Were Here Tonight’ which entered the UK singles chart in both 1985 and 1986 and has been sampled by many artists since its release.
His second album ‘Hearsay’ was released in 1987 with seven tracks entering the UK singles chart including ‘Fake’ and ‘Criticise’ which reached number 4. The album went platinum in the UK and gold in the USA with ‘Criticise’ and ‘Fake’ becoming popular dance anthems in the UK clubs
